Mick George Ltd started as a single tipper truck in 1978 and we have grown to become one of the leading suppliers to the construction industry in East Anglia and the East Midlands with a commercial fleet size in excess of 380 vehicles and an extensive network of operating centres including quarries, landfill sites, transfer stations, concrete batching plants, state of the art recycling centres and soil washing facilities.

mich george 2Mick George Ltd specialises in bulk excavation, demolition & earth moving services, ready mixed concrete, a wide range of skip hire and waste management services and aggregate supply. Privately owned we employ over 500 staff and our success over the years has been recognised with a number of awards, including winning the 2015 Cambridge Business Award for Growth and being ranked in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 league table in 2015.

Having already experienced real benefit in maintaining operator compliance and following best practice, the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) provided a further platform for the company to develop its driver training, vehicle standards and management policies on.

After its success in London; FORS has rapidly expanded over the years and has been introduced into our operating areas. We identified that FORS was going to soon become an industry standard and would become a supply chain requirement for many of our customers.

In preparation for our initial FORS Bronze audit, we reviewed our current transport compliance and Health & Safety systems and procedures to ensure they met the bronze standards. The bronze standards require us as an operator to meet a foundation level of best practice in respect of management, driver, vehicles and operations’ standards.
Over the years we have always found the FORS auditors to be very fair and having worked in the transport industry, the auditors understand that one operator can meet and employ the FORS standards in a different but equally robust and effective way to another.

As a large part of our operations take place in the UK’s ‘cycling capital’ Cambridge, we identified that the standards for silver accreditation gave us a direction to take measures to further reduce Work Related Road Risk in particular towards vulnerable road users.

mick georgeEach vehicle was retro fitted with a four camera system, close proximity sensors and left turn alert. This complemented the vehicles’ GPS tracking systems and on board weighing technology that the company had already heavily invested in. All of our vehicles are now ordered with an in cab camera.

A schedule for ‘on cycle awareness’ courses and safe and economic driver training was completed. Following this Mick George Ltd started to gain a reputation in the driver community for its driver training and development. Many of our new drivers have cited the driver training and attitude toward road safety as the reason they wanted to join the company.

Being Silver accredited has created numerous commercial opportunities and our efforts to reduce Work Related Road Risk have been recognised and applauded by our local communities
