We believe in developing the potential of our people through training and are committed to ensuring that our scaffolders are among the best in the industry. All trainees and scaffolders are registered with the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS). Because we value the contribution of our staff to our success, we are an Investor in People company. Vaughan Caiger, Logistics Manager is our elected Fuel and Emissions Champion and he explains how important FORS is to our Company.
We came across FORS when tendering for work across London. Once we looked into the requirements and benefits of joining the scheme we saw that they fitted in perfectly with our ethos of improving safety whilst also complementing our drive to improve fuel efficiency.
We take compliance and safety very seriously leading us to obtain our Bronze and Silver Accreditation first time. We have incorporated the policies and procedures provided by FORS into the everyday running at Connect. Since becoming FORS Gold accredited we have continually worked to improve our vehicles, increasing our fleet over the past year from 55 vehicles to 68, whilst also improving driver visibility and improving the working conditions for our drivers reducing the number of accidents.
Some recent additions to our fleet in regards to CLOCS technology and improved vision include some of the following: – A new type of LED and audible left turn warning signal, a near side camera to view cyclists which is connected to the left turn indicator, a rear-view camera which is connected to reverse when the gear is selected, a CLOCS window for direct view and an upgrade to white noise reverse alarms.
In September 2016, we became CLOCS Champions taking a leading role in helping to reduce collisions with vulnerable road users. To further increase our driver’s awareness of vulnerable road users, all our drivers have completed the Safe Urban Driving course which was funded by the Transport for London.
“In September 2016, we became CLOCS Champions taking a leading role in helping to reduce collisions with vulnerable road users”.
Retaining our FORS Gold Accreditation under the new FORS Standard (v4.0) demonstrates how dedicated we are as a company and how we constantly review our policies and procedures. We highlight the importance of reducing our emissions as a company, improving not just road safety but the safety of all vulnerable road users in London as well as nationally. Being accredited to FORS highlights our competence and commitment to improving safety. This commitment has been recognised throughout our supply chain, demonstrating that we are operating well above the standards expected by DVSA, giving our customers great confidence in knowing that they are getting a high standard of vehicle and driver attending their site. Recently our competence has been recognised by other companies within our field, at the beginning of the year we were approached by another scaffolding firm asking us to complete a job on their behalf, this was due to the client only giving FORS accredited subcontractors access to their sites.
“We are operating well above the standards expected by DVSA, giving our customers great confidence in knowing that they are getting a high standard of vehicle and driver attending their site”.
Over the past year, we have taken advantage of any opportunity available to expand our knowledge of the latest vehicles, technology and equipment on the market, for example, the use of electric or alternatively-fuelled / powered vehicles within the fleet. One of the ways we have done this has been by attending exhibitions, our Logistics Manager went to the CLOCS Progress Event in March 2016 as well as the Freight in The City Event in November 2016 (Supported by Transport for London) finding it very insightful.
Hybrid electric cars are now being sourced as company vehicles for the management teams, we have installed an electric recharging port onsite to facilitate the use of electric vehicles. This will reduce the fuel consumption of the vehicle fleet and help to reduce the carbon foot print of the company and the creation of Greenhouse gases.
We have also installed a fleet fuel management system on site (Piusi Fuel Tank Pump) which has the capability to control, record and manage the consumption of fuel for our users at a low cost.We will continuously use what FORS has taught us to improve our quality and safety standards, helping us to reduce our carbon footprint and make the roads safer for everyone that uses them.
