Day Aggregates – Driving the future

 day agg

Day Aggregates is one of the largest independent aggregate marketing companies in the UK with an annual sales volume in excess of 4 million tonnes. The original Company, Day & Sons Ltd, was incorporated in 1947 and moved to its current site in Brentford in 1955 where its Headquarters is still based today. The Company’s reputation has been built over many years supplying aggregate to major construction projects such as Crossrail, Heathrow Airport’s T5 and the new Terminal 2. Day Aggregates is a supply chain partner with many of the UKs largest construction companies such as BAM Nuttall, Balfour Beatty and Travis Perkins. Ian McGregor (see picture below), Training and Compliance Manager for Transport and Distribution, explains how FORS has positively reinforced and contributed to best practice within Day Aggregates.

Day Aggregates became involved with FORS in the early days of the scheme. We were immediately impressed with the way it encouraged sustainable best practice for freight operators and promoted safe working practices, legal compliance and the safety of vulnerable road users. Nothing like FORS had existed  before and we embraced    the principles it established. As a long standing member we were pleased when it became a legal obligation for companies supplying the Crossrail project.

day agg 2Although we were happy that many of our management procedures and systems were already aligned to the FORS philosophy, we welcomed the opportunity to be assessed under the scheme and attained Bronze on our first attempt. The assessment confirmed we were already performing well, however there was no room for complacency. As a direct result of our Bronze assessment and with a view towards progression within the scheme, we established regular eyesight checks and revised many of our procedures.

We have always set very high standards for ourselves and after  attaining Bronze the decision was taken to progress towards Silver and ultimately Gold. This would help us improve safety, reduce our environmental impact and give us an advantage when tendering for contracts.

The benefits of FORS accreditation are clear. It has helped us to identify areas where we can improve and develop our objectives. We continue to take advantage of the reduced rates afforded to FORS accredited companies. We use AdvancedCheck for driver licence checks and forward facing cameras are supplied and fitted by Road Hawk or Bridgage to our entire fleet. The FORS workshops provide a forum to discuss ‘best practice’ with other like-minded operators. The sharing of ideas and experiences has given the industry clear direction. Better protection of road users is a major priority.

‘Protecting vulnerable road users is at the heart of our philosophy’

Our primary concern is safety. Protecting vulnerable road users is at the heart of our philosophy and to that end FORS has been invaluable. In April 2016 the first batch of drivers attended the Safe Urban Driving course. A program is now in place for all new members of the driving staff. We used a mixture of training companies such as Fleetsource, London Borough of Redbridge and Cycle Confident. The courses helped drivers to appreciate how vulnerable being a cyclist can feel. The feedback received from the drivers indicates that they now have a better understanding of the day to day pressures of cycling in London.

‘FORS has been invaluable’

We are delighted to see that the number of road related incidents year on year has reduced significantly. This is despite an increase in our overall fleet size. We feel this reflects the considerable effort that we have made in this area and FORS has provided us with ongoing guidance and support throughout.

MPG KM’s driven per Incidents Percentage Improvement
Jan-Dec 2015 6.93 94,750 17.3%
Jan-Dec 2016 6.09 120,141 26.8%

day agg 3We see FORS as extremely important to improving the image of our industry and helping to reduce its impact on the wider community. Ultimately our focus is on finding better and more efficient ways of running our operation and Gold accreditation recognises these ongoing efforts and confirms us as an industry leader. We continue to encourage our contractors to participate in the FORS scheme, many of which are realising the benefits for themselves.
