Lignacite is a family run company that has been around for 65 years. The company is firmly founded on old fashioned values without being stuck in the past. It strives to combine a keen eye for design, a love of materials and a view to the future.
With a desire to meet modern day requirements and to use natural, recycled and renewable products, Lignacite has become the market leader in innovations for concrete and facing masonry blocks.
Lignacite has provided commodity building blocks for use in landmark buildings, such as The Gherkin and The Shard, the company also supplies blocks for general housing, offices, hospitals, schools, leisure and commercial developments.
For Lignacite the use of carbonation technology is an extension to their long standing sustainability. As part of this, the company uses local sand and gravel for its blocks and up to 90% recycled waste materials, such as wood shavings, glass and shells in its products. Jackie Messina, Transport Coordinator is our elected Fuel and Emissions Campion and she explains how important FORS is to our Company.
We came across FORS when tendering for work across London. When we looked at the requirements and benefits of joining the scheme we saw that they fitted in perfectly with our ethos of improving safety whilst complementing our drive to improve fuel efficiency and reduce our environmental impact.
We take complaince and safety very seroiusly. FORS did help us by providing training and tools that improved the policies and procedures with our Bronze Accreditation.
The performance management toolkit really helped us set our targets for reducing our carbon footprint while improving our MPG. FORS has helped us improve our filing systems and procedures as well.
All our drivers have completed their Safe Urban Driving course which was funded by the Transport for London.
‘FORS has helped us achieve compliance and safety’
Our work load has trebled over the last 12 months, meaning we’ve travelled 100,000 km more than the previous year, but still managed to improve our MPG across the fleet from 7 MPG to 8 MPG. We have done this by making sure our drivers select the best possible route to our sites and reduced our Idling across the Fleet.

‘We improved our MPG across the whole Fleet in the past 12 months’
Gaining FORS Gold Accreditation shows how dedicated we are as a company to improving road safety and the safety of all vulnerable road users in London as well as nationally. We will continuously use what FORS has taught us to help reduce our carbon footprint and make the roads so safer for everyone that uses them. We have also managed to make a significant saving by reducing our fuel usage and improving our MPG.
