Commitment to change
McFen Plant are an independent plant hire and heavy haulage company, based in Stratford, East London. We provide excavators, road sweepers and transport services to the construction industry. Business Development Manager Kevin Hadlow, explains how McFen Plant committed to improving road safety for vulnerable road users through FORS.
"We became aware of FORS due to contractual conditions within Crossrail projects; this prompted us to investigate the relevance and benefits of FORS to our business. We were pleasantly surprised to see that FORS was an independent accreditation organisation focused on improving the safety for other road users, in particular those more vulnerable to injury from commercial vehicles.
"We are an organisation looking to improve the environment for society in general, but the icing on the cake was FORS helping McFen to save money whilst doing so.
"McFen Plant passed the Bronze assessment first time. This was because we had already embraced the FORS ethos within our existing policies. During the audit the FORS auditor gave advice and suggestions which proved invaluable in helping us prepare for our Silver accreditation.
"Where else could you access the resources and knowledge of so many like-minded companies from multi-nationals to specialist providers, all happily sharing their experiences good, bad or indifferent
"After attaining our Bronze accreditation I personally took advantage of the FORS workshops and obtained my FORS practitioner certificate. I am currently working towards my Level 3 certificate in Safe, Green and Efficient Fleet management - a course devised and instigated by FORS. McFen Plant also took advantage of the funded driver CPC training for our staff.
"The FORS workshops proved to be a valuable source of information and knowledge within an arena in which my peers openly shared information and results of trials they had carried out This was particularly valuable when McFen were looking at safety and monitoring technology for our fleet. Where else could you access the resources and knowledge of so many like-minded companies, from multi-nationals to specialist providers, all happily sharing their experiences in a forum where best practice is discussed openly allowing you to integrate this information into your own systems and policies?
"McFen Plant have benefitted from FORS by gaining knowledge and confidence enabling us to approach our insurers with regards to discounts on our premiums for the safety technology we had already fitted to our fleet, as well as funding for additional technology we wished to fit to our fleet. McFen are happy to say that our insurers readily agreed to these requests.
All McFen Plan vehicles are now fitted with:
- Blind spot proximity sensors
- Audible left turn alarms
- Fresnel lenses
- Reversing cameras
- Forward facing cameras
- Cyclist and pedestrian warning stickers
"Becoming Gold accredited provides a platform for McFen to showcase their commitment to the safety and environmental issues affecting society - another step toward achieving zero harm whilst carrying out our business. Being a FORS accredited company has benefitted McFen in so many ways, not least of all the savings in costs for fuel and insurance, but also by the reduction in CO2 emissions and the safety of other road users.

"Going forward, McFen Plant are looking to use the knowledge gained and apply it to other aspects of our business; for example, in the modernisation of our fleet of excavators we have taken into account their environmental impact as a major factor in all our future acquisitions - 2013 after all, why put so much effort into reducing CO2 emissions in our transport division only to cancel it out with high emissions from our plant division?"
