Serco has been running the London Cycle Hire Scheme on behalf of Transport for London since July 2010. With a fleet over 30 LWB vehicles to move bikes and 20 SWB used as support and maintenance to operate the scheme 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
As a partner of TfL’s we were introduced to FORS in 2013 and immediately put in place many of the FORS recommended procedures. We instantly saw improvements in how we operated our fleet.
The initial bronze audit gave us the opportunity to improve the way we ran our fleet and to implement new measures to track various factors such as fuel use and economy and target a reduction in CO2 emissions.
Our first step after attaining Bronze was to attend the FORS workshops covering subjects like Safe & Efficient Fleet Management and Driver Training & Assessment. These courses gave us great ideas to move forward and an opportunity to meet with fellow Fleet operators.

One major benefit was the opportunity to send our drivers on the Safe Urban Driving course offered through FORS and TfL. Our drivers returned from these courses with a far better understanding of a cyclist’s perspective of the road and why they should be given more room. As a company focused on promoting cycling in London it is key that our drivers have the knowledge to all road users safe.

We identified that the number of parking fines received was a major concern and the cost was considerable. Using training from FORS workshops we were able educate the drivers on how to park legally. We also surveyed all our delivery points to highlight where our drivers should park.
Through fuel monitoring put in place after Bronze, we noticed that our vehicles were returning poor Miles per gallon (MPG) considering their size. We decided to invest in a redesigned vehicle with more modern engines and a large reduction in weight. On a trial of 6 new vehicles we increased our fuel economy from an average of 13 MPG to 16MPG. We are now in the process of replacing our entire fleet with these new specifications which should see our fuel economy increase further.

Becoming FORS Gold will show that we are committed to provide the highest standard of service to our customers by being as safe and environmentally focused as possible. We have not only met but exceeded the standards set out by FORS for our vehicle class.
FORS workshops have introduced us to a range of safety features and skills that have motivated us to become the safest fleet possible.
