FORS bronze top tip – V7 – Vulnerable Road User Safety

FORS bronze top tip – V7 – Vulnerable Road User Safety

The purpose of bronze requirement V7 is to ensure the probability and severity of under-run collisions and close proximity incidents with vulnerable road users is minimised.  Operators must fit vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight with the following safety equipment to help protect vulnerable road users:

  • Prominent warning signage to the rear of the vehicle (where feasible) to visually warn other road users not to get too close to the vehicle
  • Side-under run protection to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight that are exempt from fitment
  • Class V and Class VI mirrors to be fitted to all vehicles where they can be mounted, with no part of the mirror being less than two metres from the ground

When checking compliance with this requirement, our auditors will be looking for evidence of vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight being fitted with vulnerable road user equipment unless proved impractical or impossible to fit. Side under-run protection can be demonstrated by the fitment of sideguards, vehicle design and/or ancillary devices (fuel tank, locker box etc) which achieve the same objective. These items shall be included in the first use check. The auditors will be looking for warning signage on vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight and a list of vehicles fitted with Class V and VI mirrors.

Consider using a spreadsheet to list all your vehicles and the equipment fitted to each. To achieve FORS bronze all vehicles at each depot in scope of your accreditation must meet requirement V7.
