Operators and drivers should note that the Transport Minister has requested that periodic training specifically takes account of other road users, particularly vulnerable road users.
As a result DVSA has stated that it will publish information to encourage drivers to include road safety training as part of the 35 hours periodic training. Furthermore, all courses seeking approval from April 2015 should include appropriate reference to vulnerable road user safety training where possible.
The Driver CPC ‘Safe Urban Driving’ training course, focuses on vulnerable road user issues. Places on this popular course are still available for FORS operators. SUD is an approved driver training course that will meet the FORS requirements and any other contractual requirements such as TfL’s Work Related Road Risk (WRRR). The funded course which is available across the UK, consists of two 3.5 hour modules, one classroom based and one practical module where drivers get out on bikes to understand the road from a cyclist’s perspective.
