\"\"Kilnbridge Construction Services Ltd has recently celebrated its 29th<\/sup> anniversary,\u00a0the renowned construction, civil engineering and specialist services company is based at\u00a0 Canning Town East London. The Plant and Transport Director Thomas Barrett explains how\u00a0 the FORS standard continues to promote best practice by nurturing and rewarding positive behaviour and a positive culture of compliance change and efficiency, it has also significantly\u00a0 contributed to our Sustainability Strategy especially in the areas surrounding CO2 & Waste.<\/p>\n

FORS has enabled the company to reduce fuel burn and correlating emissions significantly\u00a0 by setting the standard and allowing the company to raise the bar incrementally year on\u00a0year. Collision frequency reductions, particularly in urban environments along with a\u00a0reduction in PCN\u2019s issued largely attributed to the FORS e- learning and driver CPC training.<\/p>\n

The company first became aware of the FORS\u00a0 Standard through the industry press and trade\u00a0 shows back in 2010 and quickly set about\u00a0joining the scheme, our FORS number being\u00a0 000380. We wanted to promote overall best\u00a0 practice by embracing safety and compliance\u00a0 within the construction transport world.<\/p>\n

This has cultivated a culture of compliance and\u00a0excellence as the standard has evolved\u00a0with the industry, this is our 11th<\/sup> year of being FORS accredited.<\/p>\n

Kilnbridge Construction Services Ltd passed its initial bronze audit on the first attempt back\u00a0in 2010 and was one of the first construction companies in East London to achieve this\u00a0 accolade. This was the foundation that enabled the company to evolve and grow with the\u00a0 standard. We now have Mick Kemp within our team whose skills and experience will elevate\u00a0 our performance to the next level, Mick was part of the first cohort to complete the whole\u00a0 series of FORS workshops and become a FORS Practitioner, he then went on to teach the\u00a0 FORS Practitioner workshops for over 7 years.<\/p>\n

Having been bronze accredited in the early days of the FORS Standard, as soon as the opportunity arose to work towards and achieve the Silver Standard the company seized the moment and achieved this at the first attempt (again). This was also repeated at\u00a0gold standard.<\/p>\n

Once FORS accreditation was achieved, the company took advantage of the various online\u00a0 tools, FORS practitioner workshops, annual conferences, funded driver CPC training and e-\u00a0 learning. The DCPC training alone has represented some significant savings of around\u00a0\u00a310,000 per annum.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Safe Urban Driving, Staying Legal, LoCity driver CPC courses delivered by Fleet\u00a0 Source in our Hi-tech training room have assisted immensely in improving driver behaviour\u00a0 and operational efficiencies with demonstrable savings\u201d, Thomas Barrett, Plant and Fleet\u00a0 Director.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThere continues to be a reduction in low speed \/ urban incidents, this I believe is attributed\u00a0 to improved driver training, especially the SUD course\u201d, Dermot McDermott Founder & Chief\u00a0 Executive Office.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As soon as it was possible to achieve the silver and gold standards, the company set about\u00a0 achieving these at the earliest opportunity and use this to set the company apart from its\u00a0 peers and win additional work.<\/p>\n

\"\"The company carries out health checks with drivers on a\u00a0 six-monthly basis as an absolute minimum, this includes\u00a0 eyesight checks. The health assessment covers a broad\u00a0 spread of conditions with a direct link with an occupational\u00a0health professional if needed. The company actively promotes healthy lifestyles through the driver Newsletter,\u00a0 social media channels and toolbox talks.<\/p>\n

The company tries to attract drivers from a broad\u00a0 demographic; the long term unemployed, females\u00a0and ethnic minorities. The company promotes the industry\u00a0 by attending schools, colleges and job fairs.<\/p>\n

The company is mindful that it operates in Greater London and the surrounding areas, as a\u00a0 result the company brought 12 Mercedes Benz Econics which gives the \u2018best in class\u2019\u00a0 solution to various transport issues, view of VRU\u2019s & noise pollution being two key issues\u00a0 (we try to operate away from residential areas where possible and the adoption new quieter\u00a0 vehicles assists in lowering nuisance noise). These Euro 6 vehicles purchase represent a\u00a0 noise reduction of over 12Db.<\/p>\n

Modal shift opportunities continue to be examined however at this stage there remains little\u00a0 opportunity given the lack of available infrastructure for the work profile.<\/p>\n

The company has an ongoing desire to retain, maintain and develop the FORS Gold\u00a0 standard as recognition of the hard work by the whole team in consistently raising the bar.\u00a0 The fleet renewal process actively considers vulnerable road user safety in vehicle\u00a0 specification by adding technologies such as side scan and nearside proximity warning systems and left turn warnings. Our aim remains to encourage others to take advantage of\u00a0 the benefits that FORS can bring not only to logistics providers but to all road users.<\/p>\n
