Traditionally known for plant and tool hire, GAP moved into hiring non-mechanical plant, such as fencing and barriers in\u00a0 2009 and established their Lifting Hire &amp; Sales division in 2011. Recognising the various benefits of gaining FORS accreditation GAP applied, passing its initial Bronze audit first time round, an achievement we were able to\u00a0replicate when completing the natural progression to Silver.<\/p>\n<p>FORS Silver accreditation has helped GAP gain a competitive edge over those plant and\u00a0 equipment hirers who do not hold such an accreditation \u2013 it allows GAP to bid for contracts\u00a0 with customers where FORS accreditation is a prerequisite. Furthermore, it has helped GAP\u00a0 focus on and put in place policies and procedures that ensure compliance with all aspects of\u00a0 Transport\u00a0 Law.\u00a0 Given\u00a0 the\u00a0 obvious\u00a0 benefits\u00a0 to\u00a0 GAP,\u00a0 we\u00a0 are\u00a0 now\u00a0 working\u00a0 towards\u00a0 Gold\u00a0 certification.<\/p>\n<p>GAP Regional Transport Managers have taken advantage of the various FORS Practitioner\u00a0 workshops to ensure they remain up to date with the latest developments, gaining crucial\u00a0 knowledge which assists with the detailed Transport Management audits carried out on GAP\u2019s\u00a0 fleet of commercial vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>GAP drivers have also taken advantage of the various training courses and options that FORS\u00a0 offers. All GAP commercial vehicle drivers complete a range of FORS e-learning modules\u00a0 including Cycle Safety, Security and Counter Terrorism, and LoCITY Driving: Time to Clean\u00a0 Up. In addition, all the drivers also complete \u2018in person\u2019 training including Safe Urban Driving\u00a0 and\u00a0 LoCITY\u00a0 Driving.\u00a0 This\u00a0 training,\u00a0 which\u00a0 is\u00a0 included\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 overall\u00a0 detailed\u00a0 induction\u00a0 and\u00a0 training development plans for commercial drivers, arranged by GAP\u2019s dedicated in-house\u00a0 Learning &amp; Development team, helps GAP ensure that its drivers\u2019 knowledge and working\u00a0 practices are kept fully updated.<\/p>\n<p>Just as GAP invests in its staff, it does so in its large fleet of vehicles. All GAP HGVs are fitted\u00a0 with state of the art safety equipment including cameras, nearside proximity aids and audible\u00a0 reversing alarms. In this regard, FORS has been a huge help in standardising vehicle safety\u00a0 equipment across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, in addition to a growing fleet of electric and hybrid vehicles, GAP only purchases\u00a0 vehicles which are fitted with the latest Euro VI diesel engines, thus driving a reduction in CO2,\u00a0 NOx\u00a0and Particulate Matter emissions wherever possible. To further enhance and accelerate\u00a0 this reduction, GAP has invested in an industry leading asset delivery and telematics system\u00a0 which monitors driver behaviours and includes route planning to minimise \u2018unnecessary miles\u2019\u00a0 and fuel usage. To help combat this GAPs dedicated recruitment team\u00a0 have introduced financial incentives and a Driver Recruitment and Training Programme which\u00a0 aims to recruit internally and upskill existing staff where possible.\u00a0 This has the added benefit\u00a0 of the drivers, once trained and qualified, also having GAP\u2019s safety values and culture already\u00a0 ingrained.<\/p>\n<p>GAP carries out its own in-house noise assessments using the FORS recommended template.\u00a0\u00a0 Our Drivers Behaviour Code of Conduct forms part of GAPs Commercial Vehicle Handbook.\u00a0\u00a0 All driving and crane-lift operations have been assessed using equipment recommended on\u00a0 FORS Practitioner courses and are within acceptable tolerable levels. GAP actively aims to\u00a0 reduce noise where possible through the introduction of white noise reversing alarms, super\u00a0 silent pressure washers for washing vehicles and plant and local restrictions on aspects such\u00a0 as the hours during which loading and unloading of vehicles can take place and the use of\u00a0 vehicle horns.<\/p>\n<p>Given the nature of GAPs operations it is not realistic or feasible to use alternative transport\u00a0 modes such as trains or buses. \u00a0Therefore, GAP is actively reviewing its existing fleet and\u00a0 introducing hybrid\/electric vehicles where possible. \u00a0GAP has several cars on fleet and a\u00a0 number\u00a0 of\u00a0 full\u00a0 EV\u00a0 vans\u00a0 on\u00a0 trial.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Furthermore,\u00a0 GAP\u00a0 have\u00a0 fitted\u00a0 commercial\u00a0 vehicles\u00a0 with\u00a0 tracking\u00a0 systems\u00a0 that\u00a0 provide\u00a0 telematics\u00a0 data\u00a0 on\u00a0 utilisation,\u00a0 driver\u00a0 behaviour\u00a0 and\u00a0 carbon\u00a0 emissions.\u00a0 This allows us to monitor efficient vehicle use.\u00a0 Most of our fleet is now Euro 6 for\u00a0 emissions.<\/p>\n<p>GAP\u2019s ongoing and significant investment in its staff and fleet of commercial vehicles have\u00a0 helped with its target of reducing the number of accidents\/ incidents involving its commercial\u00a0 vehicles\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 number\u00a0 of\u00a0 PCNs\u00a0 received.\u00a0 Route\u00a0 planning,\u00a0 scheduling\u00a0 and\u00a0 training\u00a0 all\u00a0 contribute towards achieving this goal.<\/p>\n<p>GAP is proud of its FORS Silver accreditation and is working tirelessly towards Gold. To that\u00a0 end, GAP is to ensure that any contractors which support us will agree to be minimum FORS\u00a0 Bronze accredited moving forwards, which can be monitored through GAP\u2019s robust supplier\u00a0 verification scheme.<\/p>\n<p>GAP is proud that its vehicles display the FORS Silver logo on their bodywork.
