The nature of the work, often remote, time-pressured, and physically demanding, means that signs of stress can go unnoticed until they escalate.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember56\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This guide, based on our webinar with mental health charity Mates in Mind, brings together practical advice, legal responsibilities, and real-life insights to help spot and manage stress before it escalates.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember57\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Why this matters?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember58\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Stress can touch anyone. During the session, we heard the story of Chris, a construction worker who lost his life to stress-related suicide. His family bravely shared their story in hopes that others will seek help before reaching a crisis point. It&#8217;s a sobering reminder that stress is not just a personal issue, it&#8217;s a workplace safety issue. In high-risk sectors like construction, transport, and logistics, the need for early intervention is particularly urgent.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember59\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>What is stress, really?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember60\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Stress is a normal part of life. Our bodies need cortisol, the stress hormone, to wake up, focus, and perform. But when stress becomes too much and we can no longer cope, it begins to affect our health, mood, and work.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember61\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>The &#8220;bucket analogy&#8221;<\/strong> helps explain stress tolerance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your bucket size (stress capacity) is shaped by personality, genes, and life experience.<\/li>\n<li>Life stressors fill the bucket (workload, relationships, health, finances).<\/li>\n<li>Healthy coping strategies (&#8220;taps&#8221;) release stress: talking, sleeping well, exercising.<\/li>\n<li>Unhealthy habits (&#8220;false taps&#8221;) like avoidance or substance use let water back in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember63\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When the bucket overflows, we experience crisis. Spotting the signs early is key.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Spotting the signs of stress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember65\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Stress can manifest physically, emotionally, and behaviourally. Here&#8217;s what to look out for in yourself and others:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember66\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Physical signs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Headaches or migraines<\/li>\n<li>Tight neck, shoulders, or back pain<\/li>\n<li>Sleep disturbances or fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Digestive issues or nausea<\/li>\n<li>Hair loss or skin breakouts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember68\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Emotional signs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anxiety or persistent low mood<\/li>\n<li>Feeling overwhelmed or tearful<\/li>\n<li>Low self-esteem or self-doubt<\/li>\n<li>Irritability or anger<\/li>\n<li>Feeling disconnected or numb<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember70\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Behavioural signs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Withdrawing from others<\/li>\n<li>Changes in appetite or sleep<\/li>\n<li>Increased use of alcohol or substances<\/li>\n<li>Taking more time off work or overworking<\/li>\n<li>Making more mistakes or missing deadlines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember72\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The key takeaway: <strong>look for change<\/strong>. Behaviour that deviates from someone\u2019s usual pattern can be a red flag.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Supporting others: what to say and do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember74\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Recognising signs is only the first step. Supporting others effectively takes empathy, timing, and trust.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember75\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Especially for remote or mobile workers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check for changes in tone, responsiveness, or punctuality.<\/li>\n<li>Ask open-ended questions: &#8220;What\u2019s been most stressful lately?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid of silence. Listening without trying to fix everything builds trust.<\/li>\n<li>Share your own experiences (if you feel comfortable).<\/li>\n<li>Follow up. A single check-in isn\u2019t enough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember77\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Remember, one simple conversation can be a turning point.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember78\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Employers: legal duty and proactive tools<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember79\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Under UK law, employers have a legal duty to assess and manage risks to employee wellbeing, including mental health.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember80\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Stress risk assessments:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Must be conducted when an employee shows signs of stress and proactively when work changes may cause stress (e.g. role changes, peak periods).<\/li>\n<li>Should include conversations around workload, support, relationships, clarity of role, and change management.<\/li>\n<li>Must result in an action plan, developed with the employee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember82\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><a class=\"dkujeYzSxQdjCGepvSCqzUSaPWwSOUTFy \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/mates-in-mind\/\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Mates in Mind<\/a> offer templates and support for this process for Mates in Mind Supporters.
