But new AI-enabled technologies are offering real-time, proactive solutions that can help fleet operators reduce incidents, protect their drivers, and improve compliance with safety standards.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In a recent FORS webinar with Fleet Sense and Durite, industry experts explored how artificial intelligence can play a vital role in preventing these incidents, and how operators can introduce these systems in a way that engages drivers and supports a safer fleet culture. <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kJmDa_s2_vw\">Watch the full webinar on YouTube.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why bridge strikes are still happening<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each day in the UK, around five bridges are hit by vehicles, mostly HGVs. These incidents cost the rail and highway sectors millions each year and lead to serious delays, infrastructure damage, and increased insurance costs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FORS Director Geraint Davies noted that in his previous role running a fleet of tall trailers, human error was the cause of every bridge strike they encountered. \u201cEven the best drivers can make mistakes,\u201d he explained, \u201cespecially when under pressure or using outdated sat navs.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How AI can help<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fleet Sense and Durite now offer forward-facing camera systems that use AI to read road signs and alert drivers to upcoming low bridges. These cameras can assess vehicle height in real time, warn of impending hazards with audio-visual alerts, and adjust tone or pitch to reduce cognitive overload in the cab.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf a driver misses a height sign, the AI won&#8217;t,\u201d explained Luke Durrant from Fleet Sense. \u201cIt gives drivers the chance to avoid a mistake before it becomes a headline.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tackling driver fatigue with in-cab AI<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">AI isn\u2019t just watching the road, it\u2019s also monitoring the driver. Durite\u2019s DMS (Driver Monitoring System) uses AI to detect signs of distraction or fatigue, including mobile phone use, eye closure, or even erratic head movements. The system can issue immediate alerts, giving the driver a chance to correct behaviour before an accident occurs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to Durite, operators using their systems have seen up to a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">40% reduction in collisions<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and significant cost savings from improved driver behaviour and fewer incidents.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Balancing safety with driver trust<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The biggest barrier to adoption? Driver resistance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCameras in the cab are still a sensitive subject,\u201d said Davies. \u201cBut it\u2019s about changing the culture and showing drivers these tools are there to protect them, not to spy on them.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Durrant agreed: \u201cNo one\u2019s watching 12 hours of footage.
