London Haulage Ltd – Why Gold?

My name is Vince Kingman. I am the owner and Managing Director of London Haulage.

With several bases across the Capital – London Haulage Ltd is based in London and provides 26 x 32-tonne concrete mixers, to the construction industry for the delivery of dry, semi-dry and wet concrete. We specialise in sub-contract haulage for Hanson, Cemex, Capital and Brett Concrete as well as day hire of concrete mixers for various customers.

London Haulage was established in 1989, becoming a limited company in 2009.

We have taken every step to make sure our vehicles are safer for other road users including, Cycle Safety side guards and audible warning speakers etc. This was carried out to make sure, our fleet was safer on the road. It has been worth making these changes especially the introduction of 360-degree cameras, that save our vehicles from being falsely blamed for road incidents, and therefore our drivers being more accountable and responsible with every moment being recorded

London Haulage became a Bronze member back in 2014, as a company we were looking how we could become a compliant transport company. Company’s we were working for suggested FORS.

Going into our first Bronze audit we were nervous and yet surprised how much went into gaining the accreditation. What we were proud of was the sense that we had a good structure in place and something to aim for until the next audit.

Once we had firmly established the Bronze, we decided the time was right to move up to Silver, more and more customers had been asking us for Silver.

We have been asked to tender for work where you must hold the Gold standard, we believe that we are in the right place to gain Gold accreditation.

After achieving Silver, we took advantage of all the benefits and tools, FORS had to offer. This included the wide range of FORS toolbox talks and performance management toolkits, which helped us to achieve our target of KMPL, by noting clear consumption data for each vehicle.

The easy access training resources FORS has to offer to our drivers, has remarkably improved their driving ability and knowledge. After completing some of the online modules, we have begun to implement techniques in order to increase the safety of vulnerable road users and our drivers. We have also begun to implement ways to improve on our fleet fuel efficiency, and emission output.

‘Our fleet has seen significant improvements in their KMPL and overall working standards’

We are working with the drivers to reduce the damage to the environment as well as modernising the fleet to new state of the art vehicles which are better for the environment.

We are now accountable for our PCN’s, before they were paid off by the company we were working for. This allows us to see the impact our drivers have.

Chart does not account for us going from 12 trucks in 2018 to 26 in 2020

  • Driver health and fitness review – All drivers complete a medical questionnaire on induction as well as providing proof of an HGV medical. Every six months drivers must complete another medical update form and have an eye Due to the nature of our business and the sites to which our drivers visit all drivers undertake a drugs and alcohol test at least once a week. Our Transport Manager has an open-door policy for drivers to come and talk. In 2021 we will be promoting mental health with the drivers.
  • Recruitment of drivers – London Haulage does not have a large turn over of drivers, most recruitment is done through word of In order to retain drivers, we operate an ultra-modern fleet of trucks and pay slightly more than the national average. Our Transport manager is also very flexible with the drivers.
  • Noise assessment – We are very conscious of the noise generated by our trucks whilst delivering in public All drivers have signed a company code of practise relating to noise and out transport manager reinforces this with site visits. Unfortunately, there is always noise when delivering concrete, we try to counter the noise pollution byoperating a new modern fleet and taking special care of delivery times when working in public areas.
  • Modal shift and alternative vehicles – We will continue to monitor alternative fuelled vehicles; however, we have not found anything suitable. We are currently running the safest fleets of vehicles within

Moving ahead London Haulage will continue to modernise its vehicle fleet to ensure that we meet all the environmental and safety requirements of a London based transport company. We will continue to look at alternatively fuelled vehicles.

We take the opportunity to promote FORS at every level within our business, and the wider concrete mixer business. From email headers to our website.

As a company who predominantly works under franchise to the big players we have never really pushed our own brand, this will change in 2021, we are going to join Twitter and Facebook as well as advertising on a local roundabout and sponsoring one of our drivers youth football teams.

For the business to achieve the Gold accreditation, we will be demonstrating the true commitment of the Directors, Drivers and support staff. It will be a high point, worthy of celebration in our goal to reduce emissions, reduce injury and harm to vulnerable road users and the wider public. Improving safety in construction and ensuring all my staff and those who meet them, go home safely to their families and friends.
