JRL GROUP Ltd – Exceeding Gold Expectations

The JRL Group today encompasses 14 divisions delivering bespoke solutions for the most complex projects. Over two decades the JRL Group has grown from a company specialising in sub and superstructure packages to a business that offers managed integrated construction solutions with an annual turnover in excess of over £570m.

Founded by John Reddington in 1996, the ethos of the company is to work closely with our clients building long lasting, trusting relationships. Our inherent understanding of the markets we serve, the expertise and the hands-on approach of our group directors, reinforced by a staff culture of safe working, collaboration and commitment, has made the JRL Group a market leader within its field. Plan Safe Work Safe is the Group Policy designed to bring about a proactive cultural approach to Health & Safety. The hands-on approach personified by directors and senior leadership flows through into a collaborative culture which permeates all our delivery teams.

Brian Brockbank Group Transport Manager says, this unique approach has helped the company secure a valued and enviable reputation in a highly competitive sector. FORS has helped us achieve this, by ensuring we always operate at a very high standard, and helped us to achieve significant improvements in the reduction of fuel use, reduced Co2 emissions, lowered NOx and particular matter emission and improved our road safety record.

In 2012 we came across FORS whilst working on Crossrail, where we were introduced to higher safety standards. We have been FORS members since 2012 when we passed our first Bronze audit, which helped us to achieve best practice and improve our road safety.

We progressed to our Silver accreditation in 2015. We decided to progress to Silver as it helped us improve our overall standard of road safety and environmental footprint in the construction industry.

We then achieved FORS Gold in 2018 which shows our dedication as a company to maintaining and improving road safety and the safety of all vulnerable road users. We are proud to say we have maintained our FORS Gold accreditation and kept our standards very high by sustaining a very robust compliance system.

FORS has helped us achieve this by offering training courses, toolkits and support if required. We are proud to promote FORS and its benefits to all companies we work with. FORS assists companies in maintaining and continually improving their road safety, compliance and environmental impact.

‘Maintaining our FORS Gold accreditation promotes our reputation within the construction industry and provides evidence that we are dedicated to improving all aspects of the business, road safety and safety of vulnerable road users whilst maintaining best practice.’-Brian Brockbank Group Transport Manager

‘At JRL we acknowledge that protecting the environment and minimising our carbon footprint is one of the greatest responsibilities and challenges we face. FORS standard helps us to ensure that we achieve this.’- Noemi Newbury Group Compliance Manager

The past 12 months we have updated all our Policies, Procedures, Risk Assessments and Drivers Handbook to bring them all in line with Version 5.1 of the FORS Standards. Over the last few years we have increased the number of our FORS practitioners within the group from 2 to 6.

FORS Gold accreditation demonstrates to all our clients and competitors that we take compliance, safety and emission awareness very seriously. Our FORS Gold accreditation continues to add value to our company, and it ensures that we maintain the high standard that is required in the construction industry.

  • We ensure that all of our drivers complete a comprehensive Medical Declaration annually, even though the FORS Standard only requires this to be done every 5 years. Our Company Policy states that all drivers must notify any changes to their medical condition to the company as soon as possible, and if they have started taking any medication prescribed by their GP or any other over the counter drugs. The company will then investigate and checks the medical condition and medication against the government list of medical conditions that could affect their driving. This is to determine, if a driver is still safe to drive a company vehicle. In some cases the company would request a letter from the driver’s doctor to confirm his fitness for driving. Alternatively, the driver will be referred to Occupational Health for further investigation and examination. The driver will not be able to commence driving duties until he receives the all clear.
  • We have recently adopted a recruitment policy to encourage young drivers to pursue a career as a HGV driver and to choose the Transport Industry as their career path.
  • A FORS introduction is included in our driver induction pack.
  • We have 4 Operating Centres where all the vehicles are kept, which all situated in industrial estates. We don’t carry out any vehicle maintenance at any of these depots, as all vehicle servicing and maintenance is done by reputable main dealers, at their premises. All our vehicles are fitted with white noise reversing alarms.
  • Due to the distances our vehicles travel and the weights/type of products they carry, we haven’t found any suitable alternative vehicles. 100% of our vehicles are now Euro 6 compliant and use Adblue to help in reducing our carbon footprint and improve our MPG. We do everything possible to reduce our carbon footprint through better planning and promoting our anti- idling policy.

JRL Group’s electrification strategy road map is to have 5% of HGV vehicles fully electric by 2027, ensuring that majority of our sites will have electric charging points installed including a provision for super-fast chargers. We are also looking at our current procurement strategy to reduce emissions. FORS GOLD provides our senior management and operational teams evidence that the group is meeting and surpassing industry standards from all aspects including operational efficiency, compliance and will assist in the vision for a Green Future.

Retaining FORS GOLD Accreditation shows our dedication as a company not only in London, but also nationwide in maintaining and improving road safety and the safety of all vulnerable road users. We will continuously use all the benefits and tools of FORS to help reduce our carbon footprint and make the roads safer for everyone that uses them.
