Government launches consultation on ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans

The Government has opened a consultation on bringing forward the date on ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2040 to 2035, or earlier if a faster transition appears feasible.

In addition to moving forward the ban on sale of new petrol and diesel cars, the new consultation is exploring the option of including hybrids. The proposals relate to new cars and vans – owners of existing petrol, diesel and hybrid cars and vans will still be able to use these vehicles and buy and sell them on the used market.

The Government is seeking the public’s views on:

  • The phase out date
  • The definition of what should be phased out
  • Barriers to achieving the proposals
  • The impact on different sectors of industry and society
  • What measures are required by government and others to achieve the earlier phase out date

You can check out the consultation page on Gov.UK here. Responses can be sent to [email protected].

The consultation closes Friday 29 May 2020.
